Study Groups
A program that we’re introducing in Fall 2007 is one for a more rigorous study of Objectivism. These more formal meetings are designed to follow courses based on materials available from the Ayn Rand Institute. Covering Objectivist courses such as Logical Thinking, Understanding Objectivism, and Objective Communication, members will develop a more thorough understanding of Objectivism and explore ideas in more detail than would be possible in weekly meetings. These courses will make it possible for members to be more than just practitioners of the ideas--they will teach them how to communicate and spread them as well.
Online Audio-Visual Media
During the 2007-2008 academic year, LOGIC will be making speaking events, meetings, and other content available on our website in audio and video formats.
LOGICON
Short for “LOGIC Conference”, LOGICON will be a weekend conference of Objectivist lectures aimed primarily at UCLA’s philosophy and humanities students and faculty.
Most of our general speaking events are political in nature because they tend to attract wider audiences. But the purpose of LOGICON is to address philosophic basics in metaphysics, epistemology, and ethics--to establish Objectivism as a serious and comprehensive philosophy in academia. By exposing UCLA’s humanities departments to the ideas of Ayn Rand, we can make Objectivism a staple of philosophical scholarship and eventually make it possible to have an Objectivist professor at the university.
More broadly, LOGICON is intended to be a student-geared version of the Ayn Rand Institute’s Objectivist Summer Conferences (OCON). More than just a series of lectures for UCLA students and faculty, we will invite students from across the country as well as the general public.
Although still in the early stages of planning, we hope to make LOGICON a reality in the 2008-2009 academic year.
OCON Scholarship Program
Despite ARI’s generous discounts for students, OCON remains a substantial financial burden for many. With sufficient funding, LOGIC could subsidize the cost of attending OCON for exceptional LOGIC scholars.
